13 injured in communal violence in Godhra

Godhra (Gujarat), Sept. 5. (PTI): At least 13 people, including a DSP, were injured and two vehicles torched and several damaged as communal violence broke out when a Ganesh immersion procession was stoned here today, forcing authorities to clamp curfew on parts of this communally sensitive town.

Police fired three rounds in the air, lobbed tear gas shells and swung batons to quell rampaging mobs, official sources said.

Violence erupted when stones were pelted at the Ganesh procession as it wound its way through minority-dominated Polan Bazaar provoking retaliation from devotees, they said.

At least 10 people, who were part of the procession, were injured, the sources said, adding three policemen, including a DSP, also received injuries when a police picket was attacked.

Two trucks were set ablaze, several other vehicles damaged and properties attacked prompting authorities to clamp curfew on violence-hit areas.

The situation was under control and Ganesh immersion at other places passed off peacefully, the sources said.

Director-General of Police K Charavarthi said a company of Rapid Action Force (RAF) had been deployed in sensitive areas to prevent any untoward incident.

He said the Inspector-General of Police (Vadodara range) was supervising the situation.
